"Neural Dust makes noise out of a wood hut on an old dairy farm on the outskirts of Toowoomba, Australia. Their music is a hybrid mix of industrial metal, electronics, and existential dread." Neural Dust debuted into the scene in 2024 with their album 'Human Face Machine' and now they are back with their EP 'Deus Necare'. The four track EP "...confronts

class inequality, war, existential dread, and the duplicity of humanity. Each track stands on its own yet connects to a larger vision: a relentless examination of the forces that shape, break, and betray us." Because we have quite a lot to go through I will break down the concept of each track first before a general overview of the musicality of the EP, so let's get into it.

"I'm sorry, I don't want to be an Emperor. That's not my business." The story begins with 'Dust to Dust', a poignant tale of "class inequality, propaganda and the machinery of war." The song is told with the assistance of Charlie Chaplin, by the use of excerpts of his famous anti-fascist speech in The Great Dictator. The lyrical tone of 'Dust to Dust' is something akin to B.Y.O.B by System of a Down, and stands as a political revolution anthem. "1% controlling the rest, While billions starve, the billionaires stress, How they are saving your freedom, your families, your rights, While mining your data, to pay for their...War, War, The fastest way to slaughter the poor. Kill off, The mob, Before they can rise up and settle the score! The only certainty of war, Is slaughter, Slaughter of the Poor". This track points out that we are repeating history and not learning from it; dragging you to a place of realisation that if we do not stand up and fight for ourselves, all hope is lost. It points out that we are willingly handing over our freedoms and information as the division of the wealthy and poor only increases. Lyrically this song would not be out of place in a political punk setting and it is great to see it so openly displayed in metal. "Soldiers! Don’t give yourselves to brutes-men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives-tell you what to do-what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men”.

Next up is 'Anguish'. Where does the protection of the perpetrator end and the innocent become priority? Sprung from the concept of lambing seasoning, 'Anguish' will have you asking yourself "what happens when there is no shepherd, no law, no protection against the predators that feed without mercy?" "Lambs lie in the field, Innocence too small to shield. Wings beat overhead, Daylight breaks, bringing dread. As Feathers blot out the sun, The lambs cry out, start to run. One by one they fall, With no warning at all." The track tackles the harsh notion that most of us have or will experience at some point in our life, the lack of control as the people "above us" take what they desire without regard or care for those that are being sucked dry. The idea that morals are a poor or innocent person's quality is unfortunately a well documented sentiment, which is conveyed delicately and unapologetically throughout this track. "The field lies still, the battle’s done, Lambs are lost, the shadows won. The earth drinks deep, but there’s no cure, The cries are silent, the pain endures. What’s left behind—shattered, broken, torn, Innocence slaughtered, the soul’s forlorn."

Instead of chapters in a story, DEUS NECARE is a collection of fractures—distinct but bound by the same pressure. Some songs tear open wounds of political violence (Dust to Dust), others evoke haunting metaphors of innocence consumed (Anguish), while others spiral into psychological torment (Close My Heart). The result is an engrossing journey that balances aggression and atmosphere, violence and reflection. Every riff, every silence, and every lyric is part of a confrontation—not just with power, but with the truths we hide from ourselves

The third track off of the EP is 'No Sanctuary' where you are dragged off the shore and into the blackened depths of the ocean. Will you transform or be lost to an icy watery grave forever? The song makes me think about a point in life where you have a choice to make; do you take the path that is easy, or the path that will bring you growth? "Dream of a broken sea, Let go and cease to be. Float down where none can see, and sleep. Dream of a broken sea, Let go and cease to be. For eternity, No shore, no sanctuary". Let the power of the element water wash away your hurt, heal you, transmute the past self into a future self to be proud of, or let the sea take you, fall into the nothingness of existence, the choice is yours but if you choose nothingness there is no coming back. I'm not sure if this song is a metaphor for suicide, but that is where my mind was pulled when listening to the lyrics. "Now you float alone in waters unknown. The ocean black,You’re never turning back. The salt takes its toll,You sink to your soul.No shore to be seen,Waves everywhere." 'No Sanctuary' hits entirely different from the previous two tracks. It serves as an inner reflection, compared to the societal reflections of the songs preceding it.

The final track from this EP is 'Close My Heart'. 'Close my heart' follows a tale of a loss of self identity, "each verse peeling back layers of masks, whispers, and convulsing thoughts. Shadows dance behind dimming eyes while voices gnaw from within, blurring the line between torment and release." I am not going to lie to you dear reader, even knowing the concept of this song coming into it, it actually hit me very hard in a way I couldn't have anticipated. I had to give myself a break and come back to it. This only proves the power of the writing and the performance, but here we stand. "I think, I fear, I fracture—A mind, unwound, by rapture. Skin I wear, don’t belong. It shifts, it splits, it screams “I’m wrong!” Each breath, becomes a task, Another lie, behind the mask. The mirror cracks with ill intent-discontent!" After I sat with myself for a while, I jumped back in to listen again with fresh ears. Towards the end of the track, the song shifts to a redemption ark, where the subject becomes free of the torturing self doubt and acceptance takes over. "By its end, the song teeters on the edge between annihilation and freedom, asking whether release comes through silence, surrender, or vanishing into nothing at all." "Mind is still Of thoughts or dreams Nightmares gone The Silence screams! I closed my heart to this desire. Desire done, Delusion seen, From torments hold I’m finally free! I am what I am."

Let's jump into the musicality of 'Deus Necare'. Vocally there are so many techniques being used and the vocal tonnes are so unique. You will find calm and crisp cleans, vocal fry of all varieties, classic rock tonnes, gutturals, hauntingly breathy vocal runs and all of this is paired with the angelic additions of a feminine voice in 'Close My Heart' and choir in 'No Sanctuary'. The combination keeps things interesting and shows the level of passion and dedication that Neural Dust put into their music. The emotions portrayed throughout this EP hits incredibly hard within the vocal lines.

Instrumentally 'Dust to Dust' feels almost like an enchantment is being placed over you, lulling you to blissful unconsciousness, before the rebellion kicks back in. This is artfully portrayed through the use of the guitars and drums as they transform from the calming magic to the chaotic freedom defying energy. 'Anguish' is ominous from the beginning and makes me feel like I need to duck, run and hide. The tension in my shoulders listening to this song was honestly crazy. The use of silence is next level as a "calm before the storm" for the climax of the story. 'No Sanctuary' pulls you in, like a siren to the water before you realise you are tangled in seaweed and drowning with no escape and no one is coming to save you. The song sits heavy in the chest as it flows instrumentally between acceptance and the fight to break free. The steady rhythm of the drums throughout this song and the constantly changing guitar gives an amazing representation of the dual nature of this track. 'Close My Heart' in my opinion almost feels like an old school rock ballad. It is the "softest" musically and if I was just listening to the instrumentals I would think it was a love song. It is the furthest from the other tracks but shows the bands range of skill beautifully.

'Deus Necare' is an incredible social, political and individual commentary piece. If you like thought provoking lyricism backed up by instrumental and vocal story telling, this is an EP for you.
