THE NAMELESS: FEAR SINGLE REVIEW
Coffs Harbour, NSW deathcore quartet The Nameless have returned with their latest single FEAR. The Nameless took to the scene in 2022 with their debut EP Systematic Exploitation, followed by Albums The Descent (2023), Humanity's Demise (2024), The Nameless (2025), To Where The
Wind Blows (2025) and EP Loss (2024). Putting on the pace, Running as fast as you can, Stalking rather then chase, You’re scent gives you away, To hunt a cunt and kill runt, The scent of your fear, Gives you away. Away. Bitch. Fuck you. Vocally FEAR is chaos incarnate, representing the versatility of the most extreme form of heavy vocals. Considering the sounds coming from Vocalist Vai, he is surprisingly legible, with clear diction and the most interesting combination of Will Ramos style highs, Taylor Barber tunnels and Phil Bozman lows. Vai is an outstanding vocalist with an incredible variety of techniques and command over his vocal style.
“FEAR” represents a significant shift for the band, both sonically and lyrically. Rather than their usual symphonic-based songwriting, the track embraces a more groove-driven approach, incorporating pitch effects, unconventional guitar noises and riffs designed to hit hard in a live setting.
As I cut each limb away, Peel off the skin, Watch as I flay, As I’m ripping the tendons straight off the bone, A sharp needle now your eyes are sewn shut, A large blade and I’ll pull out the heart. Fear is the perfect name for this track as you are immediately put on edge by the whirlwind of guitars and drums. During my first play through, I actually jumped because I wasn't expecting the bombardment to be so instantaneous. During the first thirty seconds there is a moment with the cymbal use that made me think of the old slasher behind the shower curtain scene, which I thought was a really cool moment if that was intentional. The changing tempo and use of electronics cinch the horror theme together as it makes the instrumentals feel sinister and otherworldly.
Lyrically, the band took inspiration from the horror and slasher genres, approaching “FEAR” with violence and horror firmly in mind. Written collectively by all members of The Nameless, the track explores a darker and more unsettling side of the band's songwriting.
Putting on the pace, Running as fast as you can, Stalking rather then chase, You’re scent gives you away. The lyrics of FEAR made me nauseous in the best way possible. FEAR tells the story of being hunted down, dismembered, flayed alive and put back together like a somehow even more horrific and foul version of Frankenstein's monster. I'm not the biggest horror fan so all-in-all the general story was grotesque to me, but The Nameless achieved their goal by making the listener uncomfortable. The imagery in the lyricism was artfully done, staying within the delicate balance of descriptive story telling while not being too detailed. As I repair your body and bring you back to health, Your begging for mercy only fuels my hate, I’ll prolong your painful miserable end, Only to bring you back and do it again.
The Nameless will be performing at The Backroom Coffs Hotel on October 24th in celebration of the release of FEAR, with special guests Repriever, Lesser and Nevergone. Tickets available at the link:
