ØCEANÍA: RACCONTO SINGLE REVIEW

Chilean pop-punk two-piece band ØCEANÍA released their latest single Racconto in November last year, following their debut single Constelación

in 2019, EP Inmersión (2019) along with further singles Cuervos (2020), Ayer (2021) and Imperios (2025). Growing up with bands like Blink 182, Yellowcard and Good Charlotte, you know I was excited for this one. I will freely admit that I don't know any Spanish so I am going to have to respectfully skip over the contents of the lyrics, but I will however talk about the musical skill, vocal prowess and the energy of Racconto. Without further ado, let's jump into the track.
"A slow unraveling. Racconto moves between silences and surges, tracing the memory of something you can't quite name."

We will first approach how the song made me feel as I listened to it on repeat. In my minds-eye I was transported back into my childhood home, wrapped in a fluffy blanket watching a movie with mum, before the energy switched and I was running around in the garden, between the flower beds and finding Cicada shells on tree at my Grandparent's house, while my Grandad weeded the garden. The song holds you in such a place of warmth and comfort with its gentle flow that it transports you into another realm. I recommend listening to it with headphones and your eyes closed; see what comes to you as you listen to the track.
Musically, it is an act of exploration. ØCEANÍA has never been interested in staying inside one genre — Racconto is proof of that. It moves through textures and moods with intention, following the song wherever it needs to go. The band is not afraid of their own identity. They are curious about it.

Next, let's discuss Cris's vocals. Cris has a clear tone that is unaffected by unnecessary theatrics. With subtle use of vibrato and smooth vocal slides between chest and head voice it creates an easy listening experience. Cris's cadence is soothing and gentle with subtle moments of grit which are used strategically to drive the emotion further. At the beginning of Racconto Cris uses an almost spoken quality to his vocal style that makes you feel like you are having a conversation with him instead of listening to a piece of music, drawing you in and holding you in place as he switches to a belting style further in the track. Racconto proves the point that softness can be just as, or more powerful as heaviness when used correctly.
Emotionally, the song is an invitation — to remember the stories that made you, to ask for guidance from the people you love, to let them into the room. On stage, this becomes literal: guests, friends, family — members of the Cøntinent — are invited to perform alongside them. The live show is where ØCEANÍA is most itself.

Finally we will tap into the musicality of Racconto. From the very beginning you are pulled into an almost Jazz style of flourishing cymbals by drummer Jadiel. The drum beat has a subtle cheekiness to it that had me smiling as I focused in on the instrumentals. There are moments where the drums pull entirely away, leaving space for the song to breathe as Cris sings, and others where the cymbals are used to fill in any blank spaces of the track, showing me how thought out the journey of this song really is. The guitar holds the steady rhythm, telling its own version of the story through the guitar solo as it crashes over you like a wave. At no point of the song does any of it feel unnecessary, over done or has you left wanting. If you are looking for a song to drift away into, Racconto is definitely it.
