TWISTED LULLABY: CONCERT REVIEW

Female fronted Alt-Metal band Twisted Lullaby hit the stage at the newly renovated TOMCAT in Brisbane on Friday the 28th of November with

local support acts Pyrokinesis and Call The Mourning. Twisted Lullaby released their fourth single 'Siren Song' in October and in celebration we reviewed the track, which you can read here.

After walking up the mammoth set of stairs at 7pm to the top of the venue I walked into a long room full of graffiti artwork, band flyers and stickers and funny hand written notes on the wall including "Suck Dick", "No I'm a lesbian." While waiting for the show to start I wondered about the venue, perusing the art on the walls, finding some interesting pieces and my favourite piece in the form of a Whisperhead

sticker nestled away by the green room door. As sound checks came to an end I made my way back to the main room and set myself up in prime position to watch the first act Alternative Rock band 'Call The Mourning'. I have previously talked about Call The Mourning in '15 Queensland Bands You Need To Be Listening To...' which you can read about here.

When Call The Mourning began their set the room was roughly a quarter full and I was disheartened for them, however the crowd grew rapidly and soon enough the whole room was full all the way back to the bar. TOMCAT being their third show that week you wouldn't have known. The set was high energy from beginning to end, on the stage and off of it, the crowd rushed forward when directed and did not back away

again. One of my favourite parts of the set was watching drummer Dominic having the absolute time of his life, throwing his entire being in the set, all while eating lollie snakes. Constance flipped between her clean and harsh vocals effortlessly, backed with harsh vocals by bassist Oscar. "We are also a little sad tonight because we were in the Good Things Finals on Wednesday, and we lost. Congrats to Boofheads." While there wasn't a huge amount of band to crowd interaction there didn't really need to be. "This is our third show this week so we are a little bit tired, so if you want to

give us a little more energy to keep us going. We can't see you back there if you want to come forward. Lovely. We are going to do a cover by a metal band called Kittie" Crowd cheers "Ohhh. We have some Kittie fans in here. We normally say that and then there is just silence. So this one is for you." Call The Mourning also had the crowd dancing their best goth wave moves to a cover of Deftones' My Own Summer (Shove It) along with originals Attention, Switch, Agonal and Villian-Victim amongst others.

Deathling Productions would like to congratulate Call The Mourning on making it to the Good Things Finals, that is a huge feat and you should all be proud of yourselves.

Gold Coast Metalcore band Pyrokinesis were up next; after some technical difficulties they took to the stage with a dominance that said "For this set, this stage is ours and you are going to know it." From the very beginning Pyro had the room's attention "Rule number one, get the fuck up all you people in there. Rule number two, if you are standing up you need to take

two steps in this way. One. Two. Yeah that's it. Oi! You people in there. Get the fuck in here. Sorry that was hostile." The crowd launched almost immediately into a feral and ferocious push pit that lasted nearly the entirety of the set. Resting his foot on the barricade and leaning into the crowd, vocalist Skyler drew you in, making it impossible to look away from performance happening in front of you. "This next one we dropped just last Thursday. Has anyone happened to hear our new song it's called Holy Water." Keep an eye out for the upcoming review "That's fair. If you don't know it we are about to teach it to you. My good friend Maxwell is going to teach you your part.

I'm going to say something to the effect of you make me wanna do do the and you are going to say bad bad thing. That was fucking tough." When I saw Pyrokinesis open for Diskust in July they also performed 'Holy water' and the level of confidence they have built while performing the track since is so wonderful to see. Back then I thought they were high energy and passionate musicians with a comedian front man and I was reaffirmed this time around. see Pyro play you need to remember your "Sporty shoes" because you are going to need them. They will have you running, bouncing, dancing and two-stepping your way through their set.

Twisted Lullaby took to the stage filling the venue immediately as crowd members flooded from their hidey-holes to watch the show. "We're Twisted Lullaby. Come closer. Come on. Come on." Vocalist Shay announced as the band jumped straight into 'Wolf'. "Are you ready? Let's fucking go." And the crowd did, with no hesitation the moshing began. "I don't think your

voices are warmed up yet, so we have a song for that. If you know it, that's great, if not, all you need to know is, I hate everything about you." before diving into a high energy rendition of 'I hate everything about you' by Three Days Grace. Next up, 'Not giving up'. During the guitar solo I appreciated that Shay stepped back to let the guitarist have their moment to shine. "This next song is about my ex who tried to murder me." "I think we should open this shit up a bit." One of my favourite things about Twisted Lullaby's set was watching the pit go through so many energy shifts and work in a variety of styles determined by the music being performed. Depending on the song it could be a bounce pit, or head banging, push pit or goth wave dance vibes, even at one point a line formed across the width of the pit with hands being thrown over shoulders and the member headbanging as

one; it was an interesting experience and I don't think I have seen such a variety within one set before and it is a testament to the spectrum of their music and how they are not bound by genre. Finally Twisted Lullaby finished off their set with a cover of "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs" by Fall Out Boy and "Diary of Jane" by Breaking Benjamin as well as "our latest original. You should go check it out on spotify..." Siren Song the crowd cheered "Fuck yeah, it's Siren Song. Check out the music video as well. This is Siren Song." I was now at the point of the show of how I had ended up there in the first place. Twisted Lullaby had graciously invited me along to watch after reviewing the track and I was curious to see how it would affect the crowd. I wasn't disappointed as I watched the crowd go through the phases of the song; being drawn in at the beginning, forming almost a trance state with slow rhythmic movements as a whole, then switching dramatically to a frenzied push pit and back again. I will never get tired of watching how music brings people together and affects their entire being. Siren song was a true example of the power of music. I climbed my way back down those stairs and onto the streets of Brisbane with the slight brain fog of post concert bliss and excitement at being trusted to give a faithful rendition of how Twisted Lullaby, Pyrokinesis and Call The Mourning performed.
