Meanjin/Brisbane Alt-Metal band Twisted Lullaby are back with their latest single drop 'Murder Me' following their release of 'Siren Song' in October last year (you can read the review here.) Twisted Lullaby describes the track, "This dark, cinematic track features lilting, yet powerful female vocals, relentless eerie tension, all encapsulated in energetic, pulse racing metal instrumentation. You’ll be on the edge of

your seat from “lights off” till “times up”." TRIGGER WARNING: Assault, murder and domestic violence. Lights off. The relief, it's finally time to play, On your knees, your love was sickening, And your screams, they scratch my tainted brain, Aren't you pleased? Till death as some would say, You can't leave. Murder Me is "A gripping psychological horror story, told from the chilling perspective of a man who never loved her." Prepare yourself for Twisted Lullaby's heaviest song yet; I was lucky enough to see this track pre-release at Twisted Lullaby's TomCat performance (which you can read the review of here) and the energy in the room shifted to something darker and more chaotic as the song pummelled the room. I am going to use a slightly niche idea

for how the song made me feel while writing this review. If you have ever seen the 1998 film release Practical Magic, one of the main characters Gillian finds herself in an abusive relationship with character Jimmy where he attempts to murder her after she tries to flee, resulting in his death; he then stalks Gillian from beyond the grave, ever watchful, sending her tokens of "affection" making sure she knows he is still there and focused on her. Murder Me sits in the same twisted energy, offering the same dark view on a relationship, while coming from a place of "I am going to make you wish you were dead, and when I do finally choose to give you that release, it will be with me looking like the doting partner who has lost the love of their life." I'll come in the

night, I'll take all your pain, You won't leave alive, I'll throw dirt on your grave, Slightly terrified, you'll call me insane, I'll have you scream and cry, You'll say murder me, Curtains rise, some would say inspired, I'll watch you scream and cry, You'll say murder me. Musically Murder Me is chunky, heavy, menacing, off-putting and energetic in all the right ways. Twisted Lullaby will have you feeling like you are being hunted through a forest after escaping mental torment and imprisonment. The tempo shifts as the song progresses gives a realistic depiction of the ever shifting mood of an abuser, having you caught between the rage, chaos and forced control. Throughout the track there are several points where the use of clicking fingers, a ticking

clock and layered voices properly sell the story. My favourite aspect that was added to Murder Me was the inclusion of the male screaming, driving home that masculine energy. Shay carries you through the tale letting the malice and aggression slip in and out of her voice at key points. The layers of harmonies throughout the song heightens the chaotic energy, while giving the impression of a conversation between an aggressor and a placating partner. What's mine is yours and your death is mine, Goodnight my love our last goodbye, A shallow grave for a shallow life, Your love is blind, And when the mourning comes, I'll be sure to hug your loved ones, You can't leave.
